Ian became a major Category 3 hurricane this morning and remains on a collision course with western Florida, including the Tampa area. Latest forecast:
Ian is currently centered over western Cuba and is moving north. Maximum sustained winds have jumped to 125 mph.
A storm surge warning is also in effect from the Anclote River to Flamingo, meaning life-threatening flooding from rising water moving inland from the coastline is possible by Tuesday. The track is a near worst-case scenario for the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater area if Ian follows a path near the center of the cone of uncertainty. This could bring the powerful eyewall through all three cities while pushing dangerous storm surge water straight into Tampa Bay and other river systems to the south. with any tropical cyclone usually spread beyond its forecast path. )Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive in southwest Florida beginning Tuesday.
Storm surge flooding could begin in far South Florida late Tuesday, and in the rest of western Florida starting Wednesday. The peak surge will occur near and south of where the center makes landfall in western Florida on Thursday. Ian will then move inland over the Southeast U.S., spreading heavy rain, some winds and the potential for isolated tornadoes later Friday into the weekend.Important uncertainty remains about Ian's track forecast with regard to Florida.
