Hoodoo Gurus bass player Rick Grossman first came to the Buttery in 1987 and credits it as a huge help in his recovery from addiction. But if the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem then Australia has an even bigger problem; it's in the denial phase according to John Ryan. The Buttery has a long history of helping those in need, starting as a youth centre in the early 1970s."We think talking about overdose is really important to better understand what's happening, but also to guide us in whether it's a priority to prevent further overdoses, or whether we continue the Australian tradition of brushing it under the carpet."The Buttery is marking 50 years of service and more than 10,000 participants through its doors.
The Buttery recovery centre marks its 50 years of service this year helping people in need, but now the site itself is in need of care. "We have ageing infrastructure here and it's not a sexy thing to talk about but we need to connect to mainline sewer, and so our septic at the moment is at capacity so we have to keep our beds at 25 maximum," Ms Crayden says.
"I do believe that people who have lived quite chaotic lives before they come here deserve more," she says.
