Gold Coast Sea World’s iconic monorail will be closing down after more than 30 years of operation. Despite plans to restore the monorail after it was closed in 2019 for the construction of a new precinct at the park, Village Roadshow Theme Parks confirmed on Friday that it was now closed for good. Village Roadshow Theme Parks chief operations officer Bikash Randhawa said the park had intended to reopen the monorail, however manufacturing issues meant that was no longer possible.
“We had to close that down because of the construction and as things evolved, the support for the infrastructure that we had in place was no longer available worldwide. “We tried very, very hard to kind of keep our spare part levels up to keep the attraction going but there came a point where that support was simply not available.” The monorail opened at Sea World in 1986 and was Australia’s first monorail system, as well as its last.
