North Melbourne have many problems and need urgent solutions, but pretending not to be North Melbourne cannot be one. | GregBaum afl northmelbourne

North Melbourne right now have many problems and need urgent solutions. But pretending not to be North Melbourne cannot be one., North’s marketing department is shifting its emphasis away from North Melbourne to Kangaroos, and the club’s time-honoured Shinboner spirit motif to “fighting spirit”.“Our club name written in full is ‘North Melbourne Kangaroos’,” their directive reads. “Our preferred short name is Kangaroos, secondary nickname is ‘Roos’ .

“External facing comms aimed at new fan acquisition will use the term ‘fighting spirit’ to help educate and make shinboner relevant to new audiences or those who don’t understand.”North, pardon the Roos, have been here before. For eight years from 1999, they also went by the name of Kangaroos, hoping to broaden their appeal. It didn’t help much. In 2007, they only barely resisted an AFL push to relocate them to the Gold Coast.

North’s pivot away from North Melbourne and the Shinboner spirit sits at odds with sentiments expressed by new president Sonja Hood as recently as two months ago.
