The untold spy story of a mole in ASIO's ranks who sold the Soviets highly classified intelligence and got away with it.

A senior officer in the counterespionage unit of Australia's premier spy agency ASIO has been exposed as a secret KGB mole, who stole and sold highly classified intelligence to the Russia ns for at least five years.

Peacock spent several years posted in Rome before returning to Australia with his family where he worked at ASIO's NSW headquarters, then located at Kirribilli on the shores of Sydney Harbour. Former colleagues described him as a keen golfer who was personable, intelligent and popular. At the time, ASIO was undergoing a difficult transformation. Its military-style leadership had gone and a judge, Edward Woodward, had been put in charge.

"The Soviets were desperate to know about Pine Gap and to know what the CIA assessments of the USSR were." Mulvenna's forthcoming book Spies and Spymasters investigates KGB moles in Five Eyes agencies, including the ASIO traitor. The information was so extensive and so critical that then-KGB chairman Yuri Andropov, who later became Soviet leader, was regularly briefed on the ASIO mole's activity.

The operational planning in Sydney trying to expose Soviet espionage "took a lot of resources, a lot of time and effort, 25/7 you're on call", Russell recalled. Subsequent information revealed the award was the prestigious Order of the Red Star and that Lazovik's recruit was an Australian intelligence officer.
