The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has carried out a series of airstrikes across Lebanon, targeting what it claims are 'strategic terrorist targets'. Earlier strikes hit residential areas in southern Beirut, with the IDF alleging they housed Hezbollah headquarters. Senior Israeli officials say senior Hezbollah commanders were the target, though it's unclear if leader Hassan Nasrallah was impacted.
The IDF has launched a fresh round of strikes in Lebanon 's capital after earlier bombing residential blocks in Beirut 's south, claiming they contained the Hezbollah headquarters.
"Before the war started, estimates suggested that Hezbollah will be able to fire 3,000 missiles at Israel every day. Hezbollah has been firing less than 10 per cent of that figure," he told ABC Weekend Breakfast.Hezbollah's Al-Manar television reported Israeli strikes in at least five areas of Beirut's southern suburbs.
Hezbollah began shelling northern Israel the day after the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas across southern Israel, which killed 1,200 Israelis. But before that, tension between the sides dates back to the 1980s. Neither side has gone as far as declaring the conflict a war just yet, but the IDF's strikes on Beirut yesterday and today — the biggest blast to hit the Lebanese capital in the past year — appeared likely to push it closer to full-fledged war.Hezbollah retaliated by firing a volley of rockets toward northern Israel, a region whose security the IDF says is its primary goal.
"We know Australia is not a central player in the Middle East, but we seek to be a constructive voice for peace and the upholding of international law, including the protection of civilians," she told the 193-member assembly.Senator Wong also paid tribute to the 1,200 people who died during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel last October, but stressed Palestinian civilians "cannot be made to pay the price of defeating Hamas".
Thousands have fled south and east Lebanon this week after Israel launched hundreds of air strikes towards the region, killing more than 700, injuring almost 2,000 and displacing tens of thousands, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The Israeli military's spokesperson Daniel Hagari said earlier on Saturday the IDF's attack targeted sites "Hezbollah constructed with designated underground spaces for storing strategic weapons".America and France tried to broker a 21-day ceasefire this week but Israel rejected it as it ramped up rhetoric of a ground invasion into Lebanon.
