The Israeli military has implemented new restrictions on media coverage of soldiers in active combat to protect them from potential legal action abroad related to war crimes allegations.

The Israeli military has implemented new restrictions on media coverage of soldiers engaged in active combat. These measures stem from growing concerns about the potential for legal action against reservists traveling abroad, facing allegations of war crimes in Gaza. The restrictions, similar to existing rules for pilots and special forces, prohibit the full identification (names and faces) of soldiers with the rank of colonel and below in media interviews.

Lt Col Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesperson, stated that this guideline aims to safeguard soldiers from incidents instigated by anti-Israel activists globally. He explained that while existing military regulations already discourage soldiers from sharing warzone footage on social media, these new rules provide additional protection. The concern arose after a Brazilian judge initiated an investigation into allegations of war crimes by an Israeli reservist, based on information provided by a pro-Palestinian group. The group connected the soldier's previous social media posts from Gaza with holiday photos, leading to the international scrutiny.
