If not quite comatose, Sydney remains quiet with lockouts lifted | npomalley

Unless you knew precisely where to look, most of new and vibrant, post-lockout-laws Sydney looked a lot like old and sleepy, tending-towards-comatose Sydney on Tuesday night.

The laws, introduced in 2014 after instances of hideous street violence in 2012 and 2013, banned venues from admitting new customers after 1.30 am and selling booze after 3am.Shortly after 11pm, a friendly bartender at the Angel Hotel, part of the Merivale empire owned by the Hemmes family, glanced at her four guests in the ground-floor bar and said things were busier than usual. Earlier in the day a spokeswoman for the group said none of its venues would be marking the evening with a function.

"Where have you guys been earlier tonight?" she said suspiciously. No, she did not want to talk, no we could not come in. She wasn't even keen on us taking photos in the street. "Locals take Ubers, not taxis, and after 12 o'clock, you can't take tourists anywhere. Some get in [the cab] but there is nothing to take them to. Sometimes they shout."Near midnight there was nothing moving but more gulls at Taylor Square, once the very heart of Sydney's nightlife along with Kings Cross, which remains locked out.
