To vote Yes, you only need to be comfortable with three concepts, encapsulated by three verbs.
Racial politics has always run through my life. My father was one of the founders of the white anti-apartheid movement in South Africa in the 1970s and I took a six-year sabbatical in 2012 to work with Noel Pearson and Danny Gilbert in Cape York. They are now putting all of their hearts, minds and souls into the Voice.
Not that it should come to this. Our intellects and our moral cores should take us there alone. The first humans to enter North America walked across the Bering land bridge from Siberia only 16,000 years ago. The First Australians had been here for 30,000 to 40,000 years by then. How many generations is that?
Really? Has this debate debased itself to that level of thinking? Is it that hard to draw a distinction between 50 years and 50,000? There is only one group of First Australians. My view is really clear: to vote Yes, you only need to be comfortable with three concepts, encapsulated by three verbs – advise, listen and ignore.the government and parliament on matters that relate to Indigenous Australians. The government will be under an obligation to read those memos and. What a small obligation.
As a nation, we are failing on Indigenous affairs. We are witnessing a slow-motion cultural genocide. It is happening on our watch. Our governments have failed. We have failed.
