Five-time grand slam champion Iga Świątek has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, but she will still be able to play the Australian Open in January. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted her explanation that the result was unintentional and caused by a contaminated dose of melatonin.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency accepted her explanation that the result was unintentional and caused by a contaminated dose of melatonin, which Świątek was taking for issues with jet lag and sleeping.Świątek is serving the final few days of her ban and will be allowed back on the tour in early December, before the 2025 season starts later that month.
It was determined her level of fault was "at the lowest end of the range for no significant fault or negligence", according to the ITIA. "It took a lot to return to training after the situation nearly broke my heart, so there were many tears and lots of sleepless nights. The World Anti-Doping Agency says it stands firmly by its investigation into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive to the same banned substance, as questions are raised over claims of food contamination. She said she has been using melatonin "for a long time", adding that she could not sleep without it due to "all my travelling, jet lag and work-related stress".
