Oh hey, we built the Ike Dike. The virtual Ike Dike that is. evan7257 👀

How it will work

The project is expected to be operational for at least 50 years. Engineers from the Corps are already thinking about how they might adapt the system for future conditions. Sea level rise data, for example, has advanced since the Corps started conceptualizing the project. The biggest concern environmentalists have is that the foundations of the gates will restrict the flow of water between the bay and Gulf of Mexico.

Vehicle traffic will be restricted around the island when the barriers close. Residents will be able to leave the island on the I-45 causeway because it will be elevated above the floodwalls. Motorists will have to take Seawall Boulevard to get to 7 Mile Road or any destinations west of the island.Jon Shapley and Ken Ellis/Houston Chronicle staffOne harm might actually be flooding. If there is a storm surge in the forecast, the Corps could close the barrier.

As it erodes, sand from the dune closest to the ocean will replenish the beach, which will ensure a healthy ecosystem.Dunes can partially recover after storms, but some sand will be lost.Source: Texas General Land OfficeThe Ike Dike dunes will radically change beach access and views. Corps officials don’t expect the views from homes to be obstructed. But people no longer will be able to see the beach from the road.
