The illegal parties, often held past 2 a.m., are raising concerns about noise, crime and underage drinking, among other issues.

Nyree's Lounge at 321 N. Second St. in Harrisburg has closed after the City of Harrisburg informed owner Joe Hobbs of illegal activity related to a hookah lounge operating at the property. Not everyone in Harrisburg wants the party to end when the clock strikes 2 a.m. and bars stop serving booze.

“Five years ago I would say we didn’t have these types of issues,” he said. “There might have been a one time birthday party. It just seems like since the pandemic there has been a definite increase in these after-hours get-togethers.” in September. Officers arrived to find 100 people attending a pop-up party at a warehouse where four people were shot, police said.

A flyer posted on Facebook advertised a Halloween party from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Oct. 29 at Nyrees. Owner Joe Hobbs said he was subleasing the space, which was being used by another owner as a late-night club. “If I can find a location that is out of the way or not out of the way where I can operate, I can make more money by selling drinks, having a DJ and charging a cover charge. There’s no overhead because I’m not having to pay taxes for a liquor license,” Sorensen said.

One of the biggest concerns is safety, Sorensen said, adding organizers aren’t following regulations, including fire codes, noise ordinances and rules related to safely selling food and drink.
