The state capital is no longer just a “city of churches”. Next month’s spectacle reflects its transformation into a modern, groundbreaking destination.

“Adelaide has had to become an early adopter of technology, and artists have always been that way, so we thought it would be interesting to bring those worlds together.”, a retrospective of the works of Istanbul-based Ouchhh studio. The exhibition, so big it will require a pop-up pavilion in Adelaide’s east end, showcases Ouchhh’s projections made entirely by artificial intelligence.

“AI is being applied to so many parts of our lives at the moment, but often it’s purely for an automation or commercialisation objective,” says Cumberlidge, who co-founded and is co-creative director of the festival with Azzopardi.“Oucch really thinks about the potential of this collaboration between human and computer – like what can this algorithm do, and how do we make an immersive experience from that?”.

I think our artists have achieved a really respectful balance between nature and technology in their work.“They set up a lab in the mountains of Canada to test everything you’ll see. But instead of their usual team of 60, only four of them have physically travelled to Adelaide. It’s been a great employment opportunity for the local technicians helping them deliver the show.

Azzopardi watched Sydney’s Vivid Festival grow up last decade during stints running programming for the Sydney Theatre Company then the Sydney Festival. She says it is the immersive nature of Adelaide’s shows that sets Illuminate apart from the winter lights festivals“I think our artists have achieved a really respectful balance between nature and technology in their work,” she says.last year that it blew people away.
