Key figures in the Minns Government have fired up at a western Sydney councillor over his proposal to ban same-sex parenting books in libraries, after threatening to pull funding from the council.
Cumberland City councillor Steve Christou attracted fierce backlash this week after leading a motion to ban same-sex parenting books from all eight of the local government area's libraries.
“To have this councillor importing this US culture war into our country and playing it out on the shelves of the local library,” he told ABC Radio National. The Arts Minister said libraries had an ever-important role to play in the dissemination of unbiased information amid a “clutter” of clashing views in the social media era, doing so in a way that encompasses a broad range of conventions.
"I just think the whole thing is ridiculous. I mean, it’s a library - you can choose to read a book or not," the Premier said. The former mayor and independent councillor insisted the ban was “not an attack on same-sex couples”, but rather a move that allowed children to freely enjoy the library without risk of “confusion”.
