Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Friday for corruption, adding to his ongoing legal battles and fueling political tensions in the country.

A Pakistani court handed down a 14-year prison sentence to former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday, finding him guilty of corruption. Khan, who is already incarcerated, will serve his sentences concurrently, meaning he will only endure the length of his longest sentence. Khan was convicted alongside his wife in a case concerning the Al-Qadir Trust, a welfare foundation they established together.

Authorities allege that Khan, while in power, accepted a land gift from a real estate tycoon, Malik Riaz, in exchange for facilitating the laundering of 190 million British pounds ($373 million). Prosecutors claim Riaz, facing fines in another case stemming from the same money laundering, was allowed by Khan to settle those fines. Thousands of Khan's supporters marched in Islamabad demanding his release before authorities dispersed them. Faith healer Bibi, recently released on bail, was arrested at the court following the conviction, according to her spokeswoman. Khan, while maintaining his innocence and asserting the charges are politically motivated, stated he would not negotiate any deals or seek relief. The sentence, which has been delayed multiple times, adds to Khan's existing four convictions, two of which have been overturned, while sentences in the other two cases have been suspended. Khan has been in custody since August 2023, facing approximately 200 charges, with his party alleging the latest conviction is a tactic to silence him. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, despite securing the most seats in February's election, was excluded from power by a coalition considered more agreeable to the military establishment. A UN panel of experts concluded last year that Khan's detention lacked legal basis and appeared intended to disqualify him from political office.
