MLK Day events were held throughout the Garden State on Monday.
On Sunday, a gym at the school was packed with volunteers who snipped away at brightly patterned fleece laid out on plastic folding tables before tying knots to make decorative frayed ends.
Projects included filling gift bags with hygiene products for women living in shelters, making sandwiches for hungry people at the Cathedral Kitchen in Camden, and crafting toys out of old t-shirts for dogs awaiting adoption. An engineer and physician, Jemison joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1987 and fivce years later orbited Earth on the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
