The long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton's classic '80s ghostly comedy reveals the old spirit of Beetlejuice is hard to summon — but there is still gooey and gory fun to be had.
Hot on the platform heels of his 1985 debut, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Tim Burton 's 1988 horror comedy Beetlejuice helped kick off one of film's most memorable runs — an irreverent, wildly inventive decade of pop cinema that yielded the likes of Batman and Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood and the deliriously anarchic Mars Attacks.
Burton recently shut down any rumours of a 'threequel' , telling Variety: "Let's do the math … it took 35 years to do this, so I'll be over 100."When Lydia gets news of her dad's death — in a plane crash-turned-shark attack, amusingly relayed via stop-motion animation — she and her performance artist step-mother Delia return to the old house for the funeral, along with Astrid and Lydia's therapy-speak chancer of a fiancé, Rory .
But it also saddles Ortega with lines like "the afterlife is so random" , while crowbarring in the sort of "emotional" connections that the young Burton would have mocked or outright rejected. Still, at its best, the sequel touches moments of the original's greatness, and there are pleasures to be found.
