was lucky enough to spend 10 years as one of the Queen's private secretaries, after more than 30 years in the diplomatic service at home and abroad.
The stays at Windsor are a little more formal. Because it is near London, some of her official duties, such as giving audiences or holding a meeting of the Privy Council, can be performed there, and she often gives a"dine and sleep," with distinguished visitors invited to spend the night. After dinner she takes her guests to the Royal Library—a treasury of historic books and papers—where the librarian has typically arranged a display of items relevant to each of her guests.
Sometimes in the mornings the Queen holds an investiture, when she confers knighthoods and decorations on people who have been awarded them by the government. She particularly enjoys this because she meets people from every walk of life; I remember her saying with delight afterward that she had met a fascinating man who bred racing pigeons.
