Schools in regional Victoria are trialling techniques used by frontline health workers to avoid teacher burnout, as almost 60 per cent of teachers are considering making an early exit from the profession. | adamlcarey

Almost 60 per cent of teachers are considering an early exit from the profession as they struggle with increasingly challenging student behaviour.

St Peter’s Primary School co-principals Mick Chalkley and Jen Roberts are trialling frontline health worker techniques to manage stress.Researchers at La Trobe University, which led the three-year study, said school staff were managing more emotionally challenging situations such as disruptive students and unhelpful parents after two years of lockdowns, but often lacked mental health support structures for themselves.

Associate Professor Fiona Gardner from La Trobe Rural Health School said reflective circles used in allied health fields, such as social work and psychology, were well-suited to schools. The school asks prospective staff to spend two days on-site, observing the way the school functions, before deciding if they want to work there.

Importantly, principals form their own reflective circles across the three schools, so that participants are at the same level and can speak freely.
