The U.K. has entered a period of mourning following the death of the longest-serving monarch in the nation's history.
The United Kingdom—and many of Queen Elizabeth II's admirers around the world—entered a period of mourning ThursdayMembers of the public leave flowers outside Windsor Castle on Thursday, following the death of QueenThe Royal Family announced at 6:30 p.m. local time the queen"died peacefully at Balmoral," a castle in Scotland.
Flags were immediately lowered to half-staff around the U.K. following the announcement of the queen's death, while massive crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London. Mourners lined up to lay flowers at the Palace and at many other locations Elizabeth frequented throughout her life, including Windsor Castle and Kensington Palace.
Prime Minister Liz Truss—in just her second full day on the job—delivered a speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street shortly after the announcement of the queen's death, saying the nation is"devastated" by the news as it welcomes its new monarch, King Charles III.
