The hospital continues to be a pioneering institution
The Royal Victoria Hospital, or as the locals call it The Royal or the RVH, was founded in 1797 as the Belfast Fever Hosptial and General Dispensary located on Factory Row. The hospital moved to West Street in 1799 then on to Frederick Street in 1817.
Initially established to cater to the poor and destitute, it has since grown into one of the most prestigious healthcare institutions in the UK. One pivotal moment in the hospital's history occurred in the early 20th century when it became a hub for groundbreaking medical research.It was during this time that Dr Willis Haviland Carrier, an American engineer, and inventor, introduced the world to modern air conditioning.
Another remarkable chapter in the hospital's history unfolded with the development of the defibrillator. In the mid-20th century, Dr. Frank Pantridge, a local cardiologist from the Poleglass area, revolutionised emergency medicine by inventing the portable defibrillator. His invention, commonly known as the"Pantridge defibrillator," was a compact, lifesaving device capable of delivering electric shocks to restart a patient's heart during cardiac arrest.
