Incredible scenes as a dangerous, potentially historic, snowstorm paralyses parts of western and northern New York with much more on the way. 9News

Residents in some parts of Buffalo spent Friday buffeted by blowing, heavy snow, punctuated by occasional claps of thunder.

The dangerous lake-effect snowstorm paralysing parts of western and northern New York on Friday is potentially a historic storm. "Typical," Zaria Black, 24, of Buffalo said as she cleared several inches of snow from her car Friday morning, as more fell. The Amazon employee expected she'd be outside much of the day and was nervous about the condition of the roads.

"I want to be very clear: This is not your normal snowfall in the city of Buffalo or in the region," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Friday, with up to 5ft of snow forecast. The mayor urged people to "stay vigilant" and stay home, and the city reinstated a travel ban.The weather service also warned of accumulations of 2ft or more of snow in northern New York on the eastern edge of Lake Ontario, and in parts of northern Michigan through Sunday.
