and now the proposal to buy the country’s largest private hospital group Ramsay Health — were developed during the fog of COVID.for Ramsay from private equity giant KKR which was confirmed on Wednesday was the culmination of a courting ritual between the parties spanning more than a year.

Perversely, while these assets in the healthcare and infrastructure sectors were disproportionately impacted by COVID, their appeal to investors is their usual earnings-certainty profile. And as Western populations, in particular, become more affluent, an increasing proportion of their money is spent on healthcare and on lucrative elective procedures.The additional sweetener for KKR lies in Ramsay’s extensive property portfolio, given most hospitals are owned rather than leased. Liberating this property would give KKR the opportunity for selling the land into a trust and having the hospitals run by an operating company.

The proposal from KKR is confirmed but is not yet a formal offer. However, Ramsay has given this suitor due diligence which suggests the $88 per share offer is in the ballpark.
