, the dark side of childhood and bad parenting. Working from a very clever script by Akela Cooper, director Gerard Johnstone expertly interweaves the comic with the macabre.
Violet McGraw plays Cady, an eight-year-old girl being brought up by her aunt Gemma after the death of her parents. Gemma works for a cutting edge Seattle toy company that produces robots for kids. As a replacement mom for her troubled niece, she’s at a total loss. She can barely look after her own house plants, let alone a bereaved kid. Gemma, though, is like a distracted, Silicon Valley version of Victor Frankenstein.
M3gan, as the doll is called, isn’t so much a toy as “a primary caregiver”. She makes sure that Cady brushes her teeth, washes her hands and always puts glasses on coasters so they don’t mark the table. Gemma hasn’t yet ironed out all the design faults. The parental controls aren’t as effective as they need to be. Like every self-respecting doll in horror movies, M3gan also turns out to have a very malicious and destructive streak.
