The Secret Life of the American Teenager actress has pivoted to directing and writing, bringing a nuanced story about teens to life in TheFallout
She never saw her pivot to director/writer coming. Park grew up in a small town in Ontario, with no family in the industry. She “sort of fell into” the arts, going to theatre camp and eventually beginning her career professionally at 15. She didn’t think she had the qualifications to direct, and never went to film school. But she was searching for something that felt more like herself.
“I never wanted to see a gun on screen,” she says. “And I'll say it right now, I'm never going to show a gun in any movie I ever make. I think that there's no reason to glorify the shooter or the violence.”Jenna Ortega filmingAnd then there was the overarching tone. Park didn’t want it to feel like an “old person” coming in to say “Look how crazy this generation is.” It had to be honest, but respectful. Truthful, but not overly triggering.
