The incoming Governor of New South Wales is questioning whether it is time for society to give up referring to ‘the glass ceiling.’
The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC will use her International Women’s Day address to query the phrase and whether it bears any relevance in modern society.in an effort to eliminate perceived workplace barriers“It is far more important to establish an empowering norm which gives women agency to act, rather than focusing on barriers which tell them they cannot.”
The Governor Designate is also expected to examine the ways in which business can lift women’s participation in decision making roles. Figures collated by the Australian Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency show while women account for 47 per cent of all workers across the country, just 13.7 per cent of women hold chairperson positions. Less than 25 per cent of directorships are in the hands of female workers, with women also representing fewer than 17 per cent of Chief Executive roles.
Justice Beazley will argue that gender diversity amounts to both professional and commercial gain, but has stopped short of endorsing quotas or targets in the workplace – fearing such moves are more readily the target of criticism.
