The 2,000-person mob that violently rioted outside a Sydney church and attacked police after a bishop was allegedly stabbed by a teenager while delivering a sermon should never have been allowed to assemble, an ex-detective has told Sky News.

The alleged attack sparked such intense outrage that an angry mob violently clashed with police outside the church and officers were forced to bunker themselves into the church to protect the boy, who was later arrested and taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. “I agree with him entirely, it should never have happened,” he told Sky News Australia’s Peter Stefanovic on First Edition.
He said the “fast and incredibly dangerous” mob was tough for the police to control as the officers looked to protect the community.
