The 57-year-old was wrongly jailed for a violent rape on a woman by the M61 motorway in Little Hulton in July 2003
An independent investigation has started into the way the complaints from lawyers representing Andrew Malikson - who spent 17 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit - were handled.
"Our investigation, which will be carried out independently of the police, will focus on the specific allegations raised in Mr Malkinson's complaints. We are not reviewing the original criminal investigation, nor do we have the power to do so. The IOPC said it received a referral from GMP in November 2020 following a complaint concerning 'the loss, and presumed destruction, of items of clothing that had been stored as evidence in the case'. The IOPC instructed GMP to carry out an investigation. At that time, 'there was no conclusive evidence that the actions of police had harmed the administration of justice', said the police watchdog.
