India mourns after Bollywood loses another star to cancer within days
Indian actor Rishi Kapoor, who starred in celebrated Hindi movies such as Chandani and Prem Rog, has died after a two-year battle with leukemia, his family said.He had been battling cancer for two yearsKapoor, 67, was the son of the legendary Hindi film actor and director Raj Kapoor, and was diagnosed with cancer in 2018.Kapoor, who was known to his family and fans by his nick-name, Chintu, is survived by his wife Neetu and son Ranbir, both popular Hindi film actors, and daughter Riddhima.
"He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents," the family said in a statement. Kapoor had been to New York for treatment, only returning home to Mumbai, India in September after having been said to have made a recovery.He first appeared on silver screen in 1955 as a child artist in his father’s film Shree 420. However, he made his debut as a lead in Bobby, a 1973 teenage romance conquering the class divide.
He went on to act in more than 100 films, many of them co-starring his wife. Kapoor had made several appearances in the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. Tributes and condolences have flown in including from star of Bollywood and American television series Baywatch and Quantico, actor Priyanka Chopra, who said it was an end of an era.A prolific social media user, Kapoor asked Indians in his last tweet to fight coronavirus together."Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukaemia.
