“Thankfully, so far we've seen actual combat operations like in Ukraine and Syria use non-kinetic counter-space capabilities such as jamming or cyber-attacks. We have yet to see a real-world use of a kinetic ASAT weapon in a conflict, and hopefully we never will.

“I don't want to say that it is good to do this test, but it makes a difference that the test is in a low altitude because these objects, they disappear fairly quickly,” Krag said.NASA scientist Mark Matney is seen photographed through a fist-sized hole in a 3-inch thick piece of aluminum at Johnson Space Center's orbital debris program lab Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006.

“If there were hostile use of kinetic ASATs, there would likely not be any immediate effects to other satellites, but there would be a large cumulative collision risk to other satellites in the same orbital region for a long time into the future,” said Weeden. In 1978, NASA astrophysicist Donald J. Kessler described a worst-case scenario. If the space around Earth got crowded enough, Kessler suggested, then one collision or explosion could inevitably lead to another.
