It's now illegal to produce, import, stock, distribute or sell 19 single-use plastic items including plastic cups, straws and ice cream sticks in India. But how effective will the ban be?

Plastic waste has become a significant source of pollution in India and a government ban on some single-use items including cups and straws has come into effect.

To combat worsening pollution, 19 single-use plastic items can no longer be produced, imported, stocked, distributed or sold in India as the first phase of a longer national plan. The government has for now exempted plastic bags but it has asked manufacturers and importers to raise the thickness to promote reuse.Thousands of other plastic products, such as bottles for drinks and bags of chips, aren't covered by the ban.

India said the banned items were identified while keeping in mind the availability of alternatives: bamboo spoons, plantain trays, and wooden ice-cream sticks.
