Diwali is not just the festival of lights for many migrants but a cultural moment to share with the next generation and keep traditions alive.

What's next? Harpeet Singh and his young family went a little bit early when it came to traditional Diwali celebrations this year. Diwali , also known as the Hindu festival of lights, is the biggest event on the Hindu calendar, celebrated with a five-day festival from October 29.

For Mr Singh, it was the first time his adopted home in regional Victoria truly reminded him of India. Dr Parasnis said events like the Gippsland Diwali festival were important in fostering a sense of belonging in migrant communities. Organisers of Morwell's Diwali celebration brought their celebration forward to entice some of the more than 260,000-strong Indian community in Melbourne the chance to bolster the regional offering.Mandy K Sharma is one of the Melburnians happy to travel to celebrate, coming east from Clyde — a drive of around one hour and 20 minutes away.

"I am doing bhangra and gidda … the traditional dance form for Punjabis and we dance and sing on Diwali," she said.The group wore sarees with a traditional gold border and depicted the South Indian dance — thiruvathira.
