The MPAA has weighed in on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and the James Mangold sequel has scored the ideal franchise age rating.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny now officially has an MPAA age rating, and the rating sits at a franchise sweet spot. After getting his start back in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark and returning for three sequels, Harrison Ford's intrepid archeologist is set to return one last time with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY As the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny release date inches closer, the MPAA has now officially given the sequel a PG-13 rating, continuing a longtime franchise trend. The film earned the rating for "sequences of violence and action, language, and smoking." This rating, and the reasoning behind it, is similar to the ratings that every past franchise installment earned, other than Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The Indiana Jones Franchise Has A Unique MPAA Age Rating History Raiders of the Lost Ark earned only a PG rating, despite featuring some intense moments of action and violence, and featuring a particularly gory climactic sequence. This is in part due to the fact that the PG-13 rating didn't actually exist at the time of the film's release.
Although the follow-up film was initially rated PG, an outcry from parents led Spielberg to make a significant change. After the response to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom's more mature subject matter, Spielberg used his power in Hollywood to create an age rating between PG and R. Thus, the PG-13 age rating was born, and it has since become the go-to rating target of many Hollywood action blockbusters.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were also both rated PG-13, but both movies featured generally less intense and graphic violence than the original two entries. It's unclear just how far Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will push its PG-13 rating, but every franchise installment thus far has included one standout death sequence.
