Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy has blamed a lack of understanding as the key reason why Australia voted 'No' to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament proposal.
Malarndirri McCarthy says Australians 'simply didn't understand' Voice proposal in interview one year on from the referendum
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton revealed the Coalition would formally oppose enshrining to an Indigenous voice body in the constitution in April 2023. In the lead-up to the October 14 anniversary, Voice architect and co-chair of the Uluru Dialogue Professor Megan Davis declared an Indigenous Voice is “an idea whose time will come”.
“We accepted that it was about changing the constitution and that’s why we took it to the Australian people and we lost. That’s it,” the minister said. The Minister for Indigenous Australians has also rejected criticism from the Opposition that the Albanese government had no ‘plan b’ to address indigenous disadvantage in the wake of the referendum defeat.
