The Melbourne Storm's decision to move away from holding regular Welcome to Country ceremonies before matches has been met with a mixed response on social media, while an Indigenous AFL great hailed the call as 'mature'.

An Indigenous AFL great has backed the Melbourne Storm 's position on Welcome to Country ceremonies, as social media reacted to the NRL club's call to scale back the pre-game ritual. The Melbourne Storm 's decision to move away from holding regular Welcome to Country ceremonies before matches has been met with a mixed response on social media, while an Indigenous AFL great hailed the call as"mature".

Matthew Stokes, a two-time premiership winner for the Geelong Cats in the AFL, has backed the Storm's statement, describing it as"mature". "I feel the moment is, in some instances, being used by people who take the chance, when speaking to more than a million people watching on television, to push their own views rather than a chance for all present to show respect for the deep history attached to the land on which the game is being played," he wrote.

Melbourne said it was not"ditching" the ceremony altogether but that a review by the club led to its decision to include all cultures in future acknowledgments. “The club will continue to support First Nations community groups and organisations, as it has done for many years, delivering programs and initiatives that promote positive health, welfare and education outcomes.”
