Landholders and Aboriginal groups in northern Australia are being paid millions of dollars worth of carbon credits to carry out prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk. Could it work in southern Australia?
Ms Symonds said the group used satellite technology, helicopters, and traditional mosaic burning techniques to manage its land.
"It's really good to have the elders out there and they're walking through saying 'well, we haven't seen that since we were kids' and that is a real sign that Olkola country is getting healthier and healthier."Mr Foley said while savanna burning had not completely stopped wildfires in northern Australia, there had been a"significant decrease".
"Obviously more research and development is required for the methodology to be modified to be applied down south, but certainly some of the successes we've been seeing across northern Australia I believe could be applicable to southern Australia," he said. "Once you turn it into an agribusiness where people are actually paid to burn, you'll see an dramatic increase in the amount of burning of country for the right reasons."
