Australia's first Indigenous allyship summit hears concerns the prime minister is walking back on his commitment to set up an independent Makaratta truth-telling commission.
The first nation al Indigenous allyship summit has been held in Wollongong , bringing together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and allies from across Australia.The Uluru Dialogue co-chair Pat Anderson is calling for the prime minister to confirm his commitment to Makarrata , a formal process for agreement-making and truth-telling.
Keynote speaker and Uluru Dialogue co-chair Pat Anderson told the summit Anthony Albanese "seemed to walk back his position on Makarrata" at Garma. Ms Anderson said despite Senator McCarthy's comments that the federal government was not moving away from its commitment, she had "a sense of deja vu". She shared many stories of the impact and heartbreak the failed referendum had caused to many First Nations people and for some families after the vote they were scared to send their children to school on the following Monday and some for the entire week.Ms Anderson urged those in the room to not give up on the cause.
