Community leaders said they were dismayed by a premature decision from the Nationals to oppose recognition the Voice.

Indigenous community leaders from Redfern to the Kimberley have urged the Nationals to reconsider their strident opposition to, arguing it will help close the disadvantage gap in regional and remote communities.

Nationals leader David Littleproud and Northern Territory Country Liberal Party senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price savaged the Voice plan, accusing the Albanese government of listening to elites on the proposed consultative body. The leaders of the Empowered Communities collaboration signed a joint statement on behalf of communities in regional, urban and remote Australia, saying they were dismayed at the premature decision.“We understood that the National Party represented regional Australians in parliament, but it has disregarded our local and regional Indigenous voices on this issue,” they said.

The group, which says it represents people in Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and NSW, called on Mr Littleproud and Nationals MPs to help design a voice that delivers practical results, “rather than passively predicting failure and playing political games.”to support the Voice. Advocates argue bipartisan support from federal parliament is necessary to give the referendum question the best chance of winning support from voters.
