As an Aboriginal person, it feels impossible to digest the freight train of messages coming towards us each day. Most of it is about us, without us, writes Bridget Brennan.

No matter a Yes or No, we must confront some fundamental questions as a nation in two days' time. Do we believe the oldest living culture on earth should have a say on its continuity? Is this the final chapter of a 20-year debate on constitutional recognition?

Indigenous people deserved so much better than the debate we were subjected to this year: the misinformation, death threats, conspiracy theories, the racist nonsense and everything in between. The worst of Australia has been on display.More than four million Australians have already visited the pre-polls. Many will make their minds up in these final hours.

This debate is serious business. And First Nations people at the coalface of closing the gap are aggrieved and horrified at the toll this is taking.On the final stretch of a gruelling few months, the Yes campaign has finally sharpened its message in the past fortnight to home in on what it says is the very reason we're having this debate: the stark reality that many Indigenous kids may not live as long as their other classmates.

The grim reality is that the divides of our nation are already plain to see. They are not cracks, but chasms that were deepening long before this referendum.
