We chat with Indira Varma & Tahar Rahim about how their characters balance the fate of the Earth's future against their own beliefs in AppleTVPlus series Extrapolations:
Extrapolations, the new miniseries on Apple TV, has taken the very real concern over climate change and turned it into a generational drama about the ways humans harm and heal one another. Created by Contagion screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, Extrapolations opens in the year 2037 as the latest round of global accords have allowed the Earth to heat up another 5 degrees. Each episode fast forwards another few years as things get progressively worse for the planet and the series' protagonists.
Tahar Rahim: You know what, we didn't have to talk about it. Sometimes, as an actor, you meet somebody [like that]. And Sienna is beautiful, nice, a warm soul, and a great actress, so you don't even have to talk. It just happened, and that's the magic of acting and movies; stories and TV series and all. It was just sublime, and I loved working with her.
And I was interested in the fact that, if you are a billionaire with that much money, what is motivating you to do what you do? Where does the ego come into play? The idea of someone thinking that they can alone can play God and affect change; that's not always the best solution. I think that's really fascinating to me. Often with these things, I feel like you ask questions.
On the human drama front, I really loved Gita's dynamic with Michael Gandolfini's character, Rowan. Can you talk about building that stepmother-stepson bond with him?
