Indonesia and China are set to deepen their trade ties and work more closely together after a meeting between presidents Xi Jinping and Joko Widodo.
In the first half of 2022, Chinese imports from Indonesia, mostly commodities, surged 34.2 per cent on year, the most after Russia.
Dr David Engel, Head of Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Indonesia Program said Mr Widodo's visit was not surprising, as Indonesia has "enormous interests in a close economic relationship with with China"."It reflects Indonesia's bebas aktif – or Independent and active – foreign policy, reinforcing the point that Indonesia is not choosing sides," he said.
Mr Nandyatama estimated that there were at least two things on Mr Widodo's table during his visit to Beijing.
