Australians are being warned to tread carefully in Indonesia as a new law banning sex outside marriage threatens to put disobedient travellers behind bars.
Australians have been told to “exercise a high degree of caution” in Indonesia by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade due to the“Indonesian Parliament has passed revisions to its criminal code, which includes penalties for cohabitation and sex outside of marriage,” the travel advice from December 8 reads.“These revisions will not come into force for three years.”
Bali has long been a go-to for Australian travellers due to the reasonable flight time, abundant sunshine and lively social scene. Australia’s long-term love affair with Indonesian travel has been called into question after the passing of the criminal code, which could eventually pose a threat to Indonesia’s multibillion-dollar tourism industry.
