Industries will gain more federal help to commercialise new products and expand their scale under a budget plan that offers more assistance but rules out a return to direct subsidies.
"We should actually be looking at what we can do to commercialise and to grow our industries here in Australia." "That needs to shift. We do want industry to be more engaged with research and we do want researchers to engage more with industry." Professor Roy Green, who led the Gillard government's manufacturing taskforce eight years ago, has called this year for substantial funding increases and systemic changes to help industry, including greater use of public procurement and more spending on technical education.
