Finance Minister Katy Gallagher says the parliamentary system for declaring benefits, including flight upgrades, is transparent but did not confirm whether she does or does not support a broader inquiry. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he never called the boss of Qantas seeking flight upgrades and insisted he had followed disclosure rules for members of parliament to the letter on Wednesday afternoon.
Albanese has been dogged by the growing controversy over close ties to Qantas and former chief executive, Alan Joyce, for days over revelations from a new book by former columnist for The Australian Financial Review, Joe Aston. When being questioned if she would support a broader inquiry into the parliamentary declaration system, Gallagher refused to say if she would or would not support one. “These are matters that are really the responsibility of the parliament.
