Influenza in San Diego County remains relatively low, with 34 new lab-confirmed cases reported in the past week, eight more than the week previous, the county Health and Human Services Agency said Wednesday.

No additional deaths were reported for the period ending Saturday. There have been two influenza deaths so far this season."While flu infections continue to trend low, nearly twice as many San Diegans have been diagnosed with influenza this season, compared to last season," said Dr. Wilma J. Wooten, the county public health officer."Flu is preventable and the influenza vaccine is the best tool we have to prevent this seasonal illness.

In addition to getting vaccinated, health officials said people should also do the following to prevent the flu:— avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth;Visit theTotal lab-confirmed cases to date number 1,543, compared to 689 at the same time last season and a 8,071 prior 5-year average during the same week.
