Westfield QB P.J. Hatter throws a pass against North Shore during a nondistrict match earlier this season. This week, the Mustangs take on Spring ISD foe Dekaney.Westfield quarterback P.J. Hatter was on a mission last week when it opened District 14-6A play against rival Spring, and he looked every bit the part in his team's win.
The left-handed dual-threat quarterback led Westfield, completing 16 of 23 passes for 504 yards, threw for seven touchdowns and rushed for one as the No. 14 Mustangs won 61-22.“I felt bad because we could have done more,” said Hatter at practice this week. “Knowing we could have done better has made us all working harder at practice. I learned that I have to be mentally focused in those type of games.
Westfield continues district play when they take on Spring ISD foe Dekaney at 7 p.m. Friday at Planet Ford Stadium.Hatter knows that the mental aspect of football is important after sustaining a torn ACL to his right knee last season at Klein Oak. He spent his first three years playing for the Panthers before transferring to Westfield."It is kind of crazy that the team I played against when I tore my knee and now, I’m playing with them," he said."I just stayed positive.
Walking into the Westfield fieldhouse for the first time, Hatter saw the tradition the Mustangs have upheld through several decades: Pictures of former players who continued their careers in college and the NFL. “I want to be in the NFL one day, and that’s my ultimate goal,” Hatter said. “I want to be a quarterback. I don’t want to move to wide receiver or running back. I have worked so hard being a quarterback and I will do whatever it takes to play quarterback at the next level.”The Houston Chronicle's Jon Poorman revisits some of the top district matchups around the Houston area during Week 5 of the high school football season.
