2018 Australian Open bolter Alex Bolt has advanced at this year's wildcard qualification in the most unfortunate of circumstances, after fellow Aussie and friend Blake Mott went down with a shock injury late in their clash.

23-year-old Mott from Wollongong had made great strides leading into this year's home grand slam after a long period out of the game, as he pushed for a maiden berth in the main draw. Leading Bolt by two sets to one in the fourth set of their wildcard play-off, Mott looked to go down innocuously after a run of the mill point. However, soon it became clear something far more serious was at hand.

Without a second thought, Bolt skipped around the net and raced over to the other side of the court to comfort his good mate who looked in agony lying on the court clutching at his wrist.Play was held up for more than 10 minutes as the chair umpire and a concerned Bolt checked on Mott, who took a medical time-out.

After a the stoppage, Mott attempted to resume play before making the devastating decision to retire after losing the next three points.
