Inner West councillors voted to oust the council’s inaugural mayor Darcy Byrne at a meeting on Tuesday night.
Cr Porteous, a former mayor of Leichhardt, acknowledged her three-month term would be short and said the council “hasn’t been a good council in many ways. It’s been a very difficult council.” She secured a majority of seven votes after the Greens teamed with independent councillors Pauline Lockie and John Stamolis. Cr Byrne won the votes of the council’s five Labor councillors.Cr Byrne said in a statement he would stand for mayor in December. He said Cr Porteous, who he said intends to step down at the election, had been installed for “a ridiculous three-month term” through “a backroom deal”.
Cr Byrne, who is a former staffer to Federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese, has also faced criticism forand accusations of strained relationships with general managers.
