Plans to build 22-storey towers close to the power station have sparked concerns it will be swallowed by a major redevelopment of the neglected Rozelle waterfront.
Plans to build towers as tall as 22 storeys near the White Bay Power Station have triggered concerns that views towards the heritage-listed site in Sydney’s inner west will be blocked by offices and apartments.
Michele Hacking, of Rozelle, was worried the power station, built between 1912 and 1917, would be “crowded out”.“The buildings will be monstrous, overshadowing the heritage building and blocking views from the southern side around Glebe and Annandale. Parker said locals broadly supported plans to restore the power station and provide public open space along the waterfront. But he said the early plans fell short of reimagining the precinct as a site of national significance.
The Balmain Association – which has pushed for the area to be transformed – said artist impressions depicted “soulless glass towers”, and the buildings should be no higher than the main roof of the power station. “The only time you’ll be able to get a good view of the power station is when you’re sitting in a queue of traffic.”Parker said traffic modelling in the plan estimated only 5 per cent of trips would be taken by private vehicles, which he described as “frankly unachievable without a radical rethink of parking and access on-site”. He said even that amount would generate a “totally unacceptable” increase in traffic, including queues of 1 kilometre on Victoria Road approaching Robert Street.
