A mother texted “oops” when explaining how she had left her child in a car all night. It was one of several failures before toddlers Darcey-Helen and Chloe-Ann Conley died after they were left in a hot car.

Darcey-Helen Conley was a happy girl, and when her little sister Chloe-Ann came along, family members recalled how the girls would play together. And on November 22, 2019, the two-year-old and 18-month-old died after they were left in a car by their mother in direct sunlight in the driveway of their Logan home, south of Brisbane.

The inquest, beginning in the Coroners Court in Brisbane on Monday, is set to examine the circumstances of the girls’ deaths, including how a report was made to Child Safety about their safety 11 days before they died.Witnesses told the inquest of instances where they were concerned about the girls’ safety with Conley using drugs, and how the girls were left in the car several times, and had been driven around by Conley in the early hours of the morning.

Conley said she wanted a boy, Ms Jackson told the court, and Conley said once the baby was born, she would dump the girl on her father’s doorstep. Mr Jackson began raising concerns about the safety of the children with Conley using drugs, the court heard, before Child Safety eventually became involved.

Power said she had warned Child Safety about Conley’s drug use, saying at the time that Darcey-Helen was in danger.
